Stayed October 2022 · 1 night
DiamondStandard King→Same room as bookedNo upgrade

Delinquently offering my impressions from single night (Saturday) paid stay in late October at this extensively renovated property which - after being closed for refurb for many years - re-opened under the Curio umbrella in late 2021. Having stayed here in its earlier (shabbier, neglected) incarnation as an independent hotel several times over the previous 20 years, immediate impression is that the significant level of "spit and shine" to update and enhance the property is absolutely evident. From the lobby through to the rooms, hotel has done an admirable job of highlighting the stylish parts of its old bones while also bringing in more modern comforts and touches. That said, definitely some limitations that they are still working through. I booked standard 1 King - I don't believe I received any type of Diamond room upgrade (and if so, it wasn't identified by the FDA). Assigned room 331, which was in odd narrow, S-shaped configuration - though it did have windows in both bedroom and bathroom, they were "half" and looked out onto the rooftop of center core of building, so net effect was limited natural light. FNB credits may be utilized at Proudfoot and Bird (which I did not dine in - seemed to be quite busy with foot traffic from wedding reception, perhaps not surprisingly for a Saturday evening) or HobNob, which functions as coffee/brunch restaurant (with sit-down seating) in morning and wine bar in evening. Got double cappuccino from latter in the morning (took away and enjoyed while sitting in gorgeous hotel lobby) and charged to room, with intent of applying $15 FNB credit to cover. This created significant confusion upon checkout: rather than checkout via app (for fear that credit wouldn't be applied), I stopped by front desk to close out in person. FDA was flummoxed by this - while he admitted he was just hired that week, his supervisor also seemed to be challenged with the request, resulting in 15+ minutes at desk and several additional charges/reversals showing up on my folio/credit card before it was finally resolved. At conclusion of this, the supervisor almost scolded me by saying I should have just told the barista I was Diamond so she would have removed that charge at that time. (That's a new one to me.) Other than that issue, enjoyed my stay. While having coffee, I overheard one of the senior staff (night manager?) walking a guest around the second floor balcony showing off the architecture and historic features - there's clear pride in their staff for the hotel. Final note: While you can purchase parking through the hotel, I simply used one of the municipal ramps in same block as hotel (connected to hotel via Skywalk, though also easily walkable outside) and paid weekend night rate much lower than posted hotel rate. Lobby view, standing from south corner of front desk by elevators and entrance to Proudfoot and Bird; Hob Nob entrance in back of photo Room level hallway carpet - clearly custom (though, amusingly, lists 2019 as re-opening date when hotel in fact was not completed until 2021) Entry closet Bedroom view from bathroom entry Headboard Layout of 3rd floor - assigned room 331
