Stayed April 2021 · 3 nights
DiamondKing Junior Suite→Same room as bookedNo upgrade

Don't see any previous posts about this DoubleTree, and currently in midst of 3-night stay, so offering my observations: Booked King Junior Suite since wanted extra space for work-cation (attending virtual conference during stay). Checked in online via app, but would not allow to select room. Assigned to room 524. Room is extraordinarily spacious for junior suite. Though not separated per se, has larger footprint than many 2-room suites in other properties - including sofa sleeper, very comfortable easy chair, full size coffee table, dining table with 3 chairs, and wet bar (equipped with sink, microwave, standard DoubleTree pod coffeemaker, and refrigerator). Bathroom is immediately off entry, with vanity/sink across from closet (furnished with 2 robes) and shower/toilet in separate room. That said, while spacious, room feels dated. Quick internet research suggests that location was previously a Radisson and switched to DT ~ 10 yrs ago. Doesn't look like there has been any real material updates in carpet, room, decor in at least that time. (It even *smelled* like I recall hotels smelling in the mid-90s when I first entered - not bad per se, but that distinctive bordering on astringent cleanser smell.) To corroborate that, marked lack of outlets (and no USB/charging stations at all) throughout room. Table lamps (4, including 2 on each side of bed) have 1 outlet in base, though notably most were very loosely fitting into any plug I used. HVAC units are also showing age - functional (responsive to thermostat) but somewhat loud - had to leave off during my Zoom calls due to noise. Executive lounge is on 11th (top) floor, and is open with full services ,including breakfast (offered every day 6:30-9:30a weekdays, 7-10a weekend) and evening reception (5:30-7:30p every day), inclusive of meal-equivalent food (first night options included salmon, roasted potatoes, and asparagus) and gratis beer, wine, and limited selection of hard liquor (didn't specifically inquire about this). Two employees are serving the hot food and drinks to guests for both breakfast and evening, though there the refrigerators with soft drinks, water, milk, and yogurt are self-serve and available all day. Breakfast selections seem reasonable: yesterday was biscuits and sausage gravy (I passed since not a huge fan of gravy), today was scrambled eggs and chicken sausage, with fresh fruit (berries, melon, pineapple) both days. Pool and fitness are are located on basement level - no restrictions on capacity identified. I went down for midday swim during lunch break today and was all by myself. Sauna is adjacent to pool (it *is* MN, after all), but is closed - presumptively due to COVID precautions. Lobby is reasonably impressive: open and modern. On-site restaurant (Pescara) is also lobby level. Had breakfast here yesterday - crab cakes benedict was very good, and too unreasonably priced ($18). All of the downtown Rochester hotels (including newly constructed Hilton 1 block away) are interconnected via skyway system which also allows for easy access to multiple restaurants (quick service and sit down) and Mayo Clinic, of course. This is also how you access city public parking ramp (adjacent to hotel, could also walk outside around corner of block for easy walk). On whole, left with favorable impression. Staff have all been very attentive. Everything is very clean and staff (and people in area in general) have been uber-observant of COVID precautions - again, perhaps not too surprising given the looming presence of Mayo Clinic (and it seems like many of the other guests that I've seen are either patients or health care providers doing business at Mayo). Older, but service seems to be going out of way to compensate. As mentioned previously, there's a newer, shinier Hilton 1 block away (opened 2019) - prices there generally seemed to be $60-$100 more per night for comparable room.
